The SVI is a composite index of need designed to by the CDC to help public health officials and emergency response planners target resources during an emergency event. The index includes variables pertaining to socioeconomic status (e.g., income, employment, education), household composition (e.g., age, disability, single-parent households), minority status and language, and housing and transportation (e.g., household crowding, no vehicle).
